Digital Input Triggered by Motion Sensor

I want to connect a motion sensor to one of the digital inputs of my UniPi, however, I'm aware that the 12V provided by the board is only to connect directly to the digital inputs and not to power external equipment. I've read that with the jumpers set correctly you can use an external power supply, however, would I be able to power the external motion sensor with a 12V external power supply and get it to trigger one of the digital inputs? Can anyone recommend and good design or a link maybe to a circuit I could use?
